    Premium Wood Pellets

    remium wood pellets

    Characteristics

    Dimensions: 6 or 8 mm

    Calorific value: 4.73 kWh/kg

    Density: 1.2 g/cm3

    Ash elements: 0.5%

    Moisture: 6%

Advantages of pellets over wood and gas

    • The calorific value and density of pellets is 50-100% higher than that of firewood.
    • Bulk wood fuel can be loaded into an automatic boiler.
    • Humidity is several times less than that of firewood and wood chips.
    • Unlike coal and gas, wood pellets are a renewable resource that does not increase the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and, therefore, does not accelerate global climate change.
    • Pellets cannot leak through cracks and cause an explosion like a gas can.
    • The price of pellets is less prone to volatility compared to fossil fuels.

    Differences between pine pellets

Pine pellets are slightly inferior to oak pellets in calorific value – 4.73 kWh/kg versus 5 kWh/kg. The ash content and humidity of any ENplus A1 class pellets do not exceed the permissible values – 0.5% and 6.8%, respectively. Compared to agro-pellets from sunflower husks, such pellets have lower calorific value but several times less ash content and higher density.

Pine compares favourably with other types of raw materials because of its high lignin content, that is, the glueing component of wood. This means that pine sawdust pellets are stronger and more resistant to mechanical damage. In addition, the resins in the composition of the pine burn perfectly, compensating for the low density of the original wood. Finally, this soft conifer requires less energy for chopping. Therefore, if the ecological footprint of fuel is essential to you, we advise you to buy pine pellets.

Why can you buy pine pellets?

Technically, pellets can burn in any hearth, including barbecues and campfires. But in some ovens, they wake up through the grate or burn inefficiently. Here is a list of equipment in which all their advantages are felt:

    • Home heating boiler
    • Automated industrial boilers in utilities and factories
    • Potbelly stove or brick oven equipped with a pellet burner or a unique basket
    • Stationary bio-fireplace for the living room
    • Portable pellet heater for a veranda or summer area of a cafe

How to check the quality of pellets

Evaluate the surface and dimensions. High-quality granules are smooth, shiny cylinders from 15 to 40 mm. A dull colour, frequent cracks, an abundance of dust, and pieces shorter than 1 cm indicate excessive fragility. The diameter of the pellets can be 6 or 8 mm, less often – 10 mm. Anything more significant than 6 mm is considered low-quality artisanal production, but this is not so. It is good enough if all the fuel in the package has the same diameter and meets the other criteria.

Determine strength. Try to break the pellet and evaluate how easy it was. The fracture of the pellet should be even, not crumble. The fuel should not crumble in your hands.

Smell it. Such a seemingly insignificant detail as smell may indicate the composition and storage conditions of the pellets. Pine pellets should have a faint smell of wood and pine needles. A musty smell indicates they were stored damp and may have picked up moisture.

Examine the sediment. Fill a handful of pellets with water. In an hour, they should completely dissolve and form a homogeneous sawdust suspension in the vessel’s lower part with water. If they have only partially dissolved, they most likely contain adhesive additives. If the raw material is not debarked before granulation, then part of the suspension will float on the water’s surface, and dark sediment of sand and dirt will be visible at the bottom. The problem is not in the bark itself but in the fact that dirt collects on it, which turns ash in the firebox.

Burn a small batch of pellets. Measure a small amount of pellets, load them into the firebox, and note the burning time and temperature. After they burn, record the amount of ash. If possible, compare several pellets this way and choose the best option.
